The Sugar Bowl Ski Team is always looking for more news to post on its web site, so submissions to the webmaster are always welcome. Here are some guidelines that may be of help.

What's newsworthy?

Almost everything! While the main focus is on race results, news on any other team activity is welcome including fundraisers, social functions, announcements, staffing, alumni, etc.

How do I submit an article?

Simply email your article to the webmaster (and cc:  Bill ). The best format for a submission is plain text. Word documents are fine too. If possible, notify the webmaster you are planning to submit an article so that the site updating can be coordinated and to avert any possible duplication of effort.

How long should the article be?

Race articles should not exceed 300 words, with 200 words being average. Announcements should be less than 100 words.

When are articles due?

As soon as they are ready! There is no set schedule, but generally we like to have weekend race results published by the following Tuesday.  For non weekend races, within two days of completion of the event.

How soon after an article is submitted will it be published?

Usually within 24 hours, unless we're off skiing. It is very helpful if you have notified the webmaster ahead of time that you are submitting an article.

What about privacy?

The site protects the privacy of all athletes by only publishing their first name and last initial. Please apply this rule to all submissions.  For more information, see the site privacy policy.

May I submit photos?

Absolutely. Submit them along with your article. Photos should be in jpeg format with a maximum dimension of 600 pixels. If you plan to submit a large number of photos, please contact the webmaster beforehand.

What should I include in a race article?

Since we always publish the race results along with the article, the article itself should add value by containing information not available in the race results. This includes things like race conditions, course difficulty, who had a breakthrough day, who had the fastest time the first run, but fell on the second run, pre and post race activities, etc. The names of the top team finisher in each race category should be mentioned, along with anyone on the podium (first three places).

Why can't my race article mention more than the top finisher or podium finishers?

There are three reasons for these guidelines. First, being mentioned should be special, and the more people that are mentioned, the less special it becomes. Second, everyone is mentioned in the race results, so including them again in the article is a duplication. Finally, without the guideline the articles would get too long.

Remember, the guidelines do encourage mentioning special performances. This means that if Jane was the second best team finisher in 8th place, but it was her first top ten finish in her career, then this does deserve mention.

Can I get volunteer credit for submissions?

Yes, you can earn a two hour volunteer credit for each article submitted if you become a regular contributor. A great way to do this is to volunteer to cover all the races for a certain series (e.g. all the Far West J4/5 races). Please contact the webmaster for more details.

Do you need anything other than the article?

It is helpful if you also include a title and a one sentence summary for the home page.

Can articles contain links to other web sites?

Yes. Often other sites (e.g. www.fwskiing.com) have articles that feature team members and a web link is very appropriate. Including a link may also allow you to shorten your article since there is no need to duplicate the existing information.
