The Sugar Bowl Freeride Team (SB Freeride) is a progressive ski education program that focuses on the fastest growing disciplines of alpine skiing Athletes learn advanced skills that relate to each discipline through on-hill training, dryland training and video review. Introductory snow safety and backcountry travel are also covered in the program. As a competitive-based program, SB Freeride prides itself on teaching life skills as strongly as skiing skills. Sportsmanship, camaraderie, friendship and team unity are strongly emphasized in order to reach our mission statement goal of satisfying the “mind, body and spirit” of each athlete.
SB Freeride boasts very low athlete to coach ratios which has produced faster learning curves and very successful competitive skiers and individuals. The SB Freeride program also offers a developmental (non-competitive) freeride group(s) which teaches younger skiers, as young as 10 years old, who wish to focus on freeride tactics but still require some basic foundational development before entering into a more advanced competition focused program.
Big Mountain or Freeride skiing has become a main stay of skiing programs throughout the country. Competitions boast sold out events with over 100 athletes on waiting lists. SB Freeride has been instrumental in the formation and production of the Tahoe Junior Freeride Series which allows local athletes to gain experience regionally before testing their skills at the national level and beyond.
Skills emphasized and perfected in the SB Freeride program are edging, balance, line selection, proper jumping techniques, steep skiing techniques, control, fluidity, strength and fitness, injury prevention and backcountry education and awareness. Along with these fundamental skills, mental and social skills are also taught to the athletes in order for them to not only win but to win or lose with grace, maturity and class.
