Big Mountain or Freeride skiing has become a main stay of skiing programs throughout the country. Competitions boast sold out events with over 100 athletes on waiting lists. SB Freeride has been instrumental in the formation and production of the Tahoe Junior Freeride Series which allows local athletes to gain experience regionally before testing their skills at the national level and beyond.
Skills emphasized and perfected in the SB Freeride program are edging, balance, line selection, proper jumping techniques, steep skiing techniques, control, fluidity, strength and fitness, injury prevention and backcountry education and awareness. Along with these fundamental skills, mental and social skills are also taught to the athletes in order for them to not only win but to win or lose with grace, maturity and class.
Slopestyle skiing has arguably altered the skiing landscape in the last decade. X Games, Dew Tour and the Free Flow Tour have all become the launching points for many successful skier’s careers. Many resorts now dedicate the majority or their terrain to slope style features and ski companies have complete lines of park and pipe specific skis. SB Freeride’s proximity to other training facilities makes for unique and high quality slope style training opportunities. Boreal and Tahoe Woodward are now the West Coast hot spot for slope style training with 100% of square footage dedicated to trampolines, foam pits, dryland training, bag jumps and crossover sport training. Along with an already dedicated park program at our home mountain of Sugar Bowl as well at other nearby mountains that SB Freeride trains at, we are poised to be the leader of freestyle skiing training and development now and in the future.
SugarBowl Freeride offers summer camp opportunities in addition to winter training. Other activities that build our program include various summer camps throughout the Northern and Southern Hemispheres as well as our extensive program at the Sugar Bowl Academy!
