Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy coaching staff provides a focused and fun training environment that reflects a commitment to long-term athlete development. Drawing on their domestic and international experiences, coaches design yearly training progressions that challenge the technical and tactical skills of each individual athlete.
Head Alpine Coach & Head Men's Alpine F.I.S. Coach
Jeff returned to the Western Region in 2011 after a five year stint as the Alpine Director of the Aspen Valley Ski Club. Prior to his role at Aspen, Jeff was the Western Region Alpine Competition & Development Manager, where he helped guide many Western Region juniors to U.S. Ski Team selections. During his six years with USSA, Jeff taught several coaches’ clinics and earned his own level 500 coaching certificate. An avid cyclist and runner, Jeff brings valuable regional and national experience to the SBA staff.
Men's Alpine F.I.S. Coach
Devin grew up in the great state of Maine in a small town just north of Portland. His youth skiing days took place at beautiful Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire and continued at Sugarloaf during his four years at the University of Maine at Farmington. At UMF, Devin participated in both baseball and alpine skiing. During his four years at UMF, Devin also worked for Sugarloaf and Carrabassett Valley Academy as a U16 and U18 coach. In 2008, Devin graduated with a degree in Community Health, a minor in coaching and a certificate in the Ski Industries Program before moving westward to Sugar Bowl Academy. He also thoroughly enjoys baseball, mountain biking and hanging out on the docks of Donner Lake.
Director of Sport Science & Women's Head Alpine F.I.S. Coach
Katharina joined the SBA staff with over ten years of national and international competition experience with the German Ski Team. She holds a Master’s degree in sports science and a National Ski Coaching Certification from the German Ski Federation. Her prior experiences as an alpine ski coach and strength and conditioning make Katharina a stellar asset to our staff. Most recently from Aspen, Katharina understands and has a great passion for our mission as well as the triumphs and challenges ski racing provides.

Eric Harlow, former USSA Eastern Region Development Director, joins the Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBSTA) in a new role as the Director of Alpine Programs. Harlow joins SBSTA with an extensive background in alpine ski racing having worked for several programs around the country. Harlow grew up in New Hampshire playing baseball, golfing, and skiing before focusing full-time on ski racing at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. Recently married, he and his wife Catherine are looking forward to getting acquainted with the Lake Tahoe area.

Gladys first started skiing at Spirit Mountain in Minnesota before joining the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club in Colorado during high school. She graduated with a degree in Kinesiology from the University of New Mexico where she was a standout member of the Lobos NCAA Ski Team. Gladys always brings her smile and enthusiasm to the hill, helping her get the most out of her kids. She spends her summers coaching ski camps and looking for big waves in Mexico. Gladys joined the Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy staff in 2012.

Michael is an alumnus of the Sugar Bowl Ski Team and attended the Sugar Bowl Academy as a Post-Graduate student. Born and raised in Truckee by two ski-instructor parents helped to shape him as a “high country” individual, and his experiences with the Sugar Bowl Ski Team developed his life-long commitment to skiing and ski racing. He brings to the Sugar Bowl Ski Team a focus on developing his athletes’ passion for skiing, enforced through building their confidence as they overcome the challenges our sport presents. Michael has also pursued interests in writing and received his Bachelors’ Degree in English Writing from the University of Nevada, Reno. He is also a familiar installation as a Wild Cherries barista as well as a life-long equestrian who actively competes in USEA Three Day Events.
Head U10 Coach
Kristin grew up in the mountains of Big Bear Lake, southern California. A SoCal girl at heart, wake boarding, surfing and hiking are a few of her hobbies. During the course of 13 ski seasons, Kristin has worked with all age groups, from U10/12-FIS and Masters. Some of her opportunities and achievements include; Acquiring her Level 200 USSA Coaching credential, coaching for QUAST (Queenstown Alpine Ski Team, NZ) and acquiring her level 2 NZSIA credential (New Zealand Ski Instructor Association), working for Snow Summit Race Team and Mammoth Mountain Ski Team, and acquiring her Level 3 PSIA Ski Instructor credential. When Kristin is off the ski hill she spends her time with her husband and her two sons, traveling the world for pleasure and work putting on conferences for the Aquaculture industry. In the off season you can find Kristin at Donner Lake on her SUP, walking the family dog Coconut, or helping out at Granite Chief Ski and Mountain Shop.

Mike spent many weekends as a kid traveling from Menlo Park to the ski resorts around Tahoe. He raced for UC Davis and, upon graduation, moved to Truckee. Mike started with the Sugar Bowl Ski Team in 2003 and his passion for sharing his love of skiing is as strong as ever. Mike’s enthusiasm, attention to detail, and dedication to his athletes goes above and beyond. During the week, Mike is in the classroom teaching 5th grade at Custom Learning Academy. As for the summers, he can be found patrolling the trails on mountain bike for Tahoe Donner.

Director of Freeride Programs
Trevor began skiing at the age of eight at Mount Ashland and never looked back. Following over ten years competing through MARA, Trevor went on to study at Southern Oregon University where he continued his racing career. Highlights include individual wins, a top 10 in State combined and qualifying for Nationals. Prior to coming to Sugar Bowl, Trevor managed the terrain park at Mount Ashland and then Sugar Bowl. Trevor is also a former competitor of the Freeskiing World Tour.
Head Snow Ranger Coach
Jon has been with the Sugar Bowl Ski Team since 2009. He grew up in northern Virginia and developed an early passion for skiing on the icy mountains of West Virginia. He attended the University of Vermont where he studied economics. Jon moved to Tahoe in 2003 and has been an avid backcountry skier ever since. He is Avalanche Level 2 certified, holds the AMGA Ski Guide Certification, and is a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR). When he is not backcountry skiing, he enjoys mountain biking, soccer, and film making/editing.
Director of Nordic Programs
Martin returned to the Truckee area in 2011 after several years as a student and coach on the east coast. After graduating from Bates College with a degree in Classical and Medieval Studies, Martin went on to coach Nordic skiing at Dartmouth College and Bates. His enthusiasm for the Sierra Nevada Mountains brought Martin back to Tahoe and to Sugar Bowl Academy. Martin’s experience coaching and racing at the NCAA level makes him a tremendous asset to our young program.
Ambrose holds a B.S. in Biology and English from Davidson College. He originally joined the SBA staff as an English teacher and quickly became an integral member of our nordic coaching staff. His spare time is divided between nordic and alpine skiing, whitewater kayaking, cycling, and trail running. He has also been editor-in-chief of American Whitewater magazine since 2002
